About MMJ VIDEO

Small video production company just starting with a long background in special make-up effects. Fantastic local crew and cast members. Miracles performed on a zero budget.

What is MMJ? To answer that you need to go back to the 1980’s. I was running a special effects make-up studio in Washington, D.C. at the time with my former partner Diane Hammond doing work on commercials, TV, print and movies. I was approached by make-up artist Cathy Smith about a newsletter on effects make-up she edited called Amateur Monster Makers, The organization of amateur make-up artists and she wanted me to take over as editor.
I did take over, wrote, published, printed and distributed the newsletter to the original subscribers and all the new ones. I made a lot of changes including the format and size and eventually I changed the title to MONSTER MAKER JOURNAL, The Organization of Amateur and Professional SPFX make-up Artists. That is where “MMJ” came from.

It went from a simple Xerox newsletter to an offset printed magazine sized “fanzine”. After I closed my effects studio in 1990 and moved to Stafford, VA. I doubled my efforts to improve Monster Maker Journal, including interviews and photos from artists like Dick Smith, Rick Baker, Mike Westmore Sr., David Ayres, Ed French and many others. It had how-to articles, make-up contests and reader’s photos. The number of subscribers had increased dramatically during this time. At one point I was sending out over 500 issues every few months.
In 1995 I met Hugh Gallagher publisher of Draculina Magazine and owner of Draculina Publishing. I showed him my Monster Maker Journal and he was excited about the idea of adding my magazine to his growing line of magazines he published. I stayed on and edited the magazine. I wrote it and created the pages and sent them to Hugh to print at his printer as a professional magazine. He created fantastic color covers and his company distributed it to news stands and comic book store all over the world. Over 4000 copies were sold every issue.

After a few issues Hugh had to stop publishing it, even though 4000 copies went out, it needed to sell more to stay profitable enough to stay in business. I am grateful to Hugh for the opportunity to have my magazine seen all over the world. I still get letters from overseas from fans who want to see more. MMJ Video Productions is a tribute to all the young special effects make-up artists who kept my magazine alive and wrote and sent amazing photos of their work. Many went on to fantastic professional careers.
Now MMJ Video Productions is set up to join the B-movie film maker community in making low budget independent videos and providing special effects make-up and props for other film companies.
